The treatment process

What is the treatment process for a nose job?

Anesthesia

General anesthesia

Operation duration

60 – 180 minutes

Recovery time

7 – 14 days

During the initial consultation, you will discuss your needs and expectations with the plastic surgeon. The surgeon will tell you what options are available and what results you can expect. Het gehele behandeltraject wordt besproken en u wordt uitgebreid geïnformeerd over de verschillende opties, de voor- en nadelen van de neuscorrectie, de nazorg, risico’s van en eventuele complicaties na de operatie. In addition, we will discuss whether your personal wishes fit your initial situation. This will be based on your medical background and the shape of your face.

In this conversation, you can also ask all your questions about rhinoplasty. Photographs of your face will be taken and a profile analysis based on that. This is because the proportions of the face are important in determining the correct treatment method and end result. There are several techniques for rhinoplasty. Sometimes a nose tip correction is sufficient, but often the correction needs to be more extensive to achieve the intended result. A nose tip correction is possible only if the rest of the nose is in balance with the face. A more extensive correction is needed if the nose is crooked, there is a hump on the bridge of the nose, or the nose is too wide or too long.

We feel it is important to inform you well during the consultation about the result to be achieved, the risks and possible complications so that you can make an informed decision. Ultimately, your wishes and satisfaction with the results of the treatment are our primary concerns.

A consultation is subject to a €100 consultation fee. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

A rhinoplasty is always performed under general anesthesia. Usually the surgery takes one to two and a half hours, depending on the extensiveness of the treatment. A nose tip correction involves making a small incision on the inside of the nose. The tip of the nose is composed of cartilage, connective tissue and skin and is therefore easy to adjust. Then the nose is reshaped to your desired shape and the incision is sutured. To give your nose support, we apply band-aids that should stay on until the checkup appointment.

The more extensive rhinoplasty can be done through a closed or open technique. With the closed technique, a small incision is made on the inside of the nose, and with the open technique, the incision comes on the bottom between the nostrils. When the position of the nose is correct and the correction is completely done, the incision is sutured. To keep the nose securely in place, it may be reinforced with a splint and, if necessary, nasal packing.

After rhinoplasty, you may return home the same day under supervision. This is usually a few hours after the procedure, when you feel well again and the plastic surgeon deems it justified. Please note that you will not be allowed to drive yourself.

After surgery, a plastic cap is placed on the bridge of the nose to protect the nose for a week. When the cap comes off after that week, stitches may also be removed. Nasal packing may be used after surgery, usually because cartilage has been taken out of the nasal septum to strengthen the nose or after correction of a crooked septum. These nasal tampons are usually removed after one day. It is normal for some bleeding to occur through the nostrils in this process.

You will be prescribed antibiotics for 1 week as a precaution against inflammation. You will also be given an ointment that you will superficially insert into the nose 2-3 times daily for 2-3 weeks. This is to prevent crusting. You should not lift, push or bend for the first week. If you must sneeze, try to build up as little pressure in the nose as possible while doing so (do not pinch it shut).

The stitches on the outside should be removed after five to seven days. The stitches inside the nose dissolve on their own, usually within 2 weeks, but it may take longer. For 6 weeks, you should not play any sports that involve contact. In addition, wearing heavy glasses during this time is not recommended. After 6 weeks, there are no more restrictions and you can do anything again.

The complete healing process of scars takes one to one and a half years. To facilitate this process, we recommend using a good scar cream and exposing your scars to UV radiation as little as possible. To promote the wound healing process, we advise you not to smoke six weeks before and six weeks after surgery and not to consume alcohol 1 week before and 1 week after surgery. This reduces the risk of bleeding and other complications.

As with any surgery, there is a small chance of a complication. Common risks are:

  • post-bleeding
  • infections
  • swelling
  • delayed wound healing
  • allergic reactions

Specific complications that may occur (in exceptional cases) with rhinoplasty are:

  • sensory changes
  • asymmetry
  • feeling as if nose is blocked

Despite the great skill and experience of the plastic surgeons at Blooming Plastic Surgery, there is always a very minimal chance that an exact symmetrical result will not be achieved. In most people, the nose is not completely symmetrical; this may also be the case after surgery. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss all the risks and possible complications with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the first few weeks, it is a good idea to reduce the pressure on your face by lying with your head a little higher. Put an extra pillow under your head or raise the headboard. We also recommend sleeping on your back as much as possible. This will minimize the pressure on your face.

For the final result, you will have to be patient: the recovery process is slow and depends on the structure and quality of your bone, cartilage and skin tissue. Usually the result can only be fully assessed after a year.

Once we have corrected your nasal bridge, you will not be able to wear (sun) glasses that rest on the nasal bridge for the first six weeks. Are glasses necessary for you? Then together we will look for a suitable solution. For example, a plaster on your forehead on which the glasses can be supported.

In most cases, the plastic surgeon makes the incisions on the inside of the nose in the nasal mucosa. This way, no scars are visible. In some cases, an incision is needed under the nose. This scar heals inconspicuously.

It is wise to avoid busy environments and contact sports for the first few weeks after surgery. This will prevent damage to your nose.

At Blooming Plastic Surgery, we perform rhinoplasty under anesthesia. You won’t experience any pain during surgery this way. After surgery, your nose may feel sensitive. If desired, you may take a painkiller to suppress the pain.

After surgery, swelling and bruising occurs. Over the course of the week, this subsides again. One week after surgery you will return to our clinic to have the stitches removed. After removal of the stitches you may resume light activities. After six weeks you will be able to resume heavier physical activities.

This depends entirely on your needs. Are you only bothered by a large or bulbous tip of your nose? Then nose tip surgery is usually sufficient. If you do not like the length, width, position or shape of your nose, we usually recommend an extensive rhinoplasty.

When the plastic surgeon corrects only the tip of the nose, a full anesthesia is not necessary. With a few small injections beforehand, the surgeon numbs the area being treated. For an extensive rhinoplasty, we put you under general anesthesia.

We recommend that you rest for at least a week after an extensive rhinoplasty. After seven days, you will visit us for a checkup appointment where the plastic surgeon will remove the splint and stitches. A nose tip rhinoplasty is generally less invasive, allowing you to return to work sooner. However, even with this procedure you should be aware of swelling and bruising.

You recover faster when you:

  • takes adequate rest;
  • avoid sports and strenuous physical activity for the first six weeks;
  • Do not use makeup that can irritate the wounds;
  • Do not drink alcohol for the first week after surgery;
  • Leave the splint in place until the doctor’s checkup appointment;
  • sleep with an extra pillow for the first few days, reducing the pressure on the wounds;
  • do not let the wounds get wet when showering.

After an extensive rhinoplasty, the surgeon places a splint to protect the nose. You will wear this at least until the checkup appointment.

The first result of a rhinoplasty is already easy to see when you return after a week for the removal of the sutures, plasters and/or cap on the nose. You will immediately see in broad outline the shape changes you did it for! After two weeks, chances are that no one can tell that you have had surgery. Of course, the nose will still be slightly swollen from the surgery. After three months, we expect 95% of that swelling to be gone. Officially, scar tissue takes a year to fully mature.
