Lipofilling

All our lipofilling treatments are performed by BIG-registered plastic surgeons who also work at the Spaarne Gasthuis. With a lipofilling treatment you can give your breasts, buttocks or face extra volume with your own fatty tissue. During the personal and comprehensive consultation, the plastic surgeon advises you in which area the fatty tissue can best be removed. Common areas here are the abdomen, hips or legs. What is unique about lipofilling is that the injected fat in your breasts, buttocks or face feels smooth and natural.

The treatment process

What is the treatment process for lipofilling?

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia

Operation duration

60 – 120 minutes

Recovery time

7 – 14 days

Prior to treatment, we invite you for a personal consultation. During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will go over your wishes with you and discuss the method that is best for you. In particular, he will consider your eligibility for lipofilling treatment. During the consultation, your attending plastic surgeon will also go over your medical history, medication use and your overall health. In addition, the plastic surgeon will tell you what results you can expect, what the possible risks are and what the best aftercare is.

A 100 euro consultation fee is charged for a consultation. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

Lipofilling treatment is performed under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. When fat is removed from a large area, it is always done under anesthesia.

Before you are anesthetized or put under anesthesia, we mark off the areas you have indicated. You will then be sedated or put under anesthesia, after which small incisions are made to “harvest fat. To make this process as smooth as possible, a liquid is injected that causes the cells to soak loose. After the liquid has soaked in for twenty minutes, liposuction is started.

Before the fat tissue is injected into your breasts, buttocks or face, the fat tissue is purified by centrifugation. After centrifugation, purified pure fat tissue containing stem cells and growth factors remains, which can be injected into your breasts, buttocks or face through small cannulas. It is important here that the fat cells are evenly distributed so that the cells get enough oxygen. However, some of the injected fat cells always die due to lack of oxygen. These are naturally disposed of by the body.

After treatment, the treated area is swollen and sore. Also, the treated area may feel painful, as if you have been exercising intensively. Three months after treatment, when the fluid has subsided and the scars are no longer red, the result of lipofilling is visible. However, it takes a year for the body to fully heal from the treatment.

What can you do yourself to promote recovery?

After treatment, it is important to consume easily digestible foods such as water, tea and rusks. In addition, we recommend that you stop smoking at least two weeks before treatment and keep it up until six weeks after treatment. This is because smoking reduces blood flow to the tissues, which has a permanent impact on the final result. Finally, you should not exercise or lift intensively for six weeks after the procedure.

Any surgical procedure carries risks or complications. The risks and complications that can occur with lipofilling treatment are as follows:

  • Haematomas
  • Dampness
  • Infections
  • Swelling
  • Mood swings
  • Visible scars
  • A post-bleeding
  • Allergic reactions to anesthesia, for example
  • Irregularities in the skin
  • Dissatisfaction concerns the outcome

Scars

Scars are red and swollen at first, but this usually lessens after six weeks. Keep in mind that a scar takes about a year to a year and a half to reach a final stage. Keep scars out of the sun and care for them with a scar cream. At our clinic, we use Staudt scar cream.

Smoking

Stop smoking at least six weeks before to six weeks after treatment. Smoking constricts blood vessels, which can cause problems with wound healing. The risk of subsequent bleeding is reduced once you stop smoking.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, anesthesia is chosen through anesthesia. You will not experience anything from the treatment.

In lipofilling under local anesthesia, the area to be treated is numbed as much as possible. In practice, this is often not enough to experience no pain at all. This is because there is a maximum amount of anesthetic fluid that may be injected and especially the edges of the anesthetized area can still be sensitive.

When you return home from your lipofilling treatment, we recommend consuming light foods such as tea and rusks. In addition, it is important that you wear your compression garment around the area where the fat was removed day and night for four to six weeks.

It is important to keep moving for the first few days after lipofilling. However, we do recommend not exercising for at least the first six weeks.

How long the fat remains in the treated area depends on each person. The body drains the fluid and dead fat cells, leaving about 60% to 80% of the injected fat tissue.

It depends entirely on your percentage of fatty tissue in the area where the fat is removed. If you have a high percentage of fatty tissue in the donor area, more fat can be injected than if you have a low percentage of fatty tissue. In addition, it is important to know that some of the injected fat tissue is disposed of by the body because these are dead fat cells that can no longer be absorbed by the body.

After treatment, very small scars of half a centimeter or less are left behind. It is recommended that if a small scab appears on the wound after the treatment, apply scar cream to minimize the appearance of the scar.
