Forehead lift

With a forehead lift or endoscopic forehead lift, we tighten the skin of your forehead and correct sagging eyebrows. Due to aging or heredity, the skin of your forehead may become saggy and slack. This creates a tired look and a heavy feeling on your eyebrows and eyelids. If you constantly have to raise your eyebrows, you know how tiring this is. To remedy this problem, we perform two types of forehead lifts: the endoscopic forehead lift and a traditional forehead lift. For optimal results, we often combine a forehead lift with an upper eyelid correction or lower eyelid correction.

What is the treatment process for a forehead lift?

Anesthesia

General anesthesia

Operation duration

60 – 90 minutes

Recovery time

1 – 2 weeks

During the intake interview with your attending plastic surgeon, you will go over everything related to the procedure. Together, you will discuss which type of forehead lift is most suitable for you, what result you can expect and what possible complications the forehead lift entails. We always give you advice and information about the plastic surgery treatment itself, the aftercare and the period afterwards.

In addition, during this consultation, the plastic surgeon examines your state of health. You can think about:

  • Previous surgeries around the face
  • Medication
  • Allergies to the extent known to you
  • Your general state of health
  • Smoking, alcohol and drug use

Based on this analysis, your wishes and the technical possibilities, our surgeon will create a customized treatment plan that includes the options.

A 100 euro consultation fee is charged for a consultation. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

A forehead lift is performed under local or general anesthesia. Just before surgery, the plastic surgeon injects a special fluid locally into your forehead skin, which causes the blood vessels to contract. This reduces blood loss. The forehead lift can then be performed in two ways: open or endoscopic. Often the choice depends on the height of your forehead and hairline and the plastic surgeon’s preference/advice, among other factors.

Open forehead lift

If your forehead is relatively high (long) and you don’t want it even higher (longer), an open forehead lift is the best choice for you. In an open forehead lift, the height of the forehead is shortened (shorter) and the eyebrows are also lifted. The plastic surgeon makes an incision just behind the hairline. This incision runs from the middle of the forehead into the hair through the inlets to halfway down the vertical hairline. The scalp is incised at a slight angle to spare some of the hair follicles, so that at some point the hair will grow back through the scar. Next, the plastic surgeon loosens the forehead skin under the skin up to the eyebrows. He pulls the forehead skin back and removes the excess skin. This thus reduces the height (length) of the forehead and also lifts the eyebrows. Then the plastic surgeon sutures the skin. This is usually done with staples, as they spare the hair follicles so there are no bald patches around the scar. These are all removed after 7 days.

Endoscopic forehead lift

If your forehead is a normal height or relatively short, an endoscopic forehead lift is the best choice for you. An endoscopic forehead lift lengthens the height of the forehead slightly, but also lifts the eyebrows without significant scarring. The plastic surgeon makes three to five incisions (about half a centimeter long) in your hairy scalp just behind the hairline. Through these incisions, the plastic surgeon uses special viewing equipment and instruments to loosen the entire forehead skin up to the eyebrows. He then slides the forehead skin upward. The excess skin is not removed, but shifted toward the top of your head (crown). The skin ridge that may form as a result disappears on its own. The plastic surgeon secures the skin at the top with small soluble or insoluble screws in the outer layer of your skull bone. In addition, he often glues the forehead skin to the lower layer with a special tissue glue. Finally, the wounds are sutured again.

A forehead lift is usually done in day surgery, but because everyone reacts differently to anesthesia and the procedure, the specialist will determine when you can go home. Please note that you will not be allowed to drive yourself after the operation. Therefore, always take someone with you to drive you home. You may experience headaches during the first week after surgery. It is important that you take absolute rest for the first few days so that your body has enough time to recover. You may experience some discomfort while sleeping due to the bandage and swelling. To minimize the discomfort, you can combat the pain with Paracetamol. Is this not enough? If so, contact the clinic so they can prescribe you something stronger.

As with any surgical procedure, there is a chance for complications to occur, but with this procedure, the chance of complications is very low. Some of the complications that may occur are:

Rare

  • Allergic reaction
  • Impaired wound healing
  • Post-bleeding
  • Infection of the wound

Very rare

  • Damage to nerves
  • Asymmetry in the face
  • Hairloss
  • Emergence of thickened scars
  • Numbness in the forehead
  • Unsatisfied aesthetic result

Scars

Scars are red and swollen at first, but this usually lessens after six weeks. Keep in mind that a scar takes about a year to a year and a half to reach a final stage. Keep scars out of the sun and care for them with a scar cream. At our clinic, we use Staudt scar cream.

Smoking

Stop smoking at least six weeks before to six weeks after treatment. Smoking constricts blood vessels, which can cause problems with wound healing. The risk of subsequent bleeding is reduced once you stop smoking.

Frequently Asked Questions

The head start you achieve through a forehead lift remains. The clock is set back but does not stand still. After cosmetic surgery, the aging process continues and how it progresses is very different for each person: for some, the results are visible for five years and for others, fifteen years. Good health plays a role in this process. Therefore, live a healthy life and take good care of your skin. This way you will get the most out of the procedure.

Most people return to work after about a week. This does depend on the type of work you do. You can only resume light housework after a week. So if you do lighter work, this week is feasible. If you do heavier physical work, it will take about a month before you can return to work.

How visible the scar is depends on the type of forehead lift we perform. For the open forehead lift, we make an incision in the hairline from ear to ear. For an endoscopic forehead lift, we make only five small incisions in the hairline. If you have sufficient hair growth, the scars will be less visible on you.
