During the initial consultation, you will discuss your needs and expectations with the plastic surgeon. The surgeon will tell you what options are available and what results you can expect. In addition, we will discuss whether your personal wishes fit your initial situation.

In this conversation, you can also ask all your questions about a facelift.

The goal of a facelift is to restore smoothness to the (sagging) skin and underlying tissue of your face and neck. The wrinkles in your face created by your specific facial expression are reduced but remain to achieve a natural result.

We feel it is important to inform you well during the consultation about the result to be achieved, the risks and possible complications so that you can make an informed decision. Uiteindelijk staan uw wensen en de tevredenheid met het resultaat van de behandeling bij ons voorop.

A consultation is subject to a €100 consultation fee. Deze worden in mindering gebracht op de uiteindelijke prijs van de behandeling.

Generally, a facelift takes place under general anesthesia. The duration of surgery depends on the extent of the procedure. Before the operation, the plastic surgeon carefully draws the area to be treated. During the surgery, an incision is made and through this incision,   the skin of the neck, cheeks and the tissue layer under the skin are loosened. This is then returned to its original position and tightened toward the ear. Any excess fatty tissue in the neck area may be removed through an incision under the chin. At the end of surgery, one or more drains (thin tubes) may be placed in the wound to drain wound fluid and blood from the wound. These drains are removed after one day. After a facelift, you will need to stay with us overnight.

After the facelift, your face is bandaged with a pressure bandage. This bandage should remain in place for several days. Generally, you will be allowed to go home the next morning under supervision. After surgery, your face and neck will be swollen and discolored; on average, this lasts two weeks. One to two weeks after surgery, the stitches are removed. The scars are always visible on close inspection, but are hardly noticeable. They run into the hairy scalp and from there down along your ear. There the scar curves around the earlobe to disappear again under the hair at the back of the ear. Depending on the indication, there may also be a small scar under your chin. The final result of a facelift is only visible after several weeks. Scars are sometimes more visible in darker skin. The complete healing process of scars takes one to one and a half years. To facilitate this process, we recommend using a good scar cream and exposing your scars to UV rays as little as possible. To promote the wound healing process, we advise you not to smoke for six weeks before and six weeks after surgery. This reduces the risk of bleeding and other complications. We also recommend that you do not drink alcohol one week before and one week after surgery.

As with any surgery, there is a small chance of a complication. Common risks are:

  • post-bleeding
  • infections
  • swelling
  • delayed wound healing
  • allergic reactions

Specifieke complicaties die in een uitzonderlijk geval bij een facelift zijn:

  • moisture deposits
  • facial stiffness
  • facial nerve damage

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss all the risks and possible complications with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our plastic surgeons specialize in performing a facelift and therefore place the scars where they are least visible. In the skin crease in front of the ears, in the hairline or directly behind the ear, they are the least visible. In the first few months, the scars are noticeable, but as time goes on, they will become lighter and lighter in color. We recommend that you care for the scars with a scar cream.

On average, a facelift is visible for about 10 to 15 years, but this does vary from person to person. Realize that the aging process in your body does continue, which can become visible in your face. By living healthy and taking proper care of your skin, you will get the most out of cosmetic surgery.

When you can return to work after the facelift depends on the type of procedure and the proper aftercare that goes with it. Whatever type of facelift we perform, you will always wear a bandage around your head for the first few days. You must not exert yourself or bend over during the first week. Physically strenuous efforts may resume after one month. Depending on the type of work you do, you can return to it after two weeks.

Can I still breastfeed after breast augmentation? The prosthesis is placed under the glandular tissue and therefore the surgery does not affect the functioning of the mammary glands. Please note that not every woman can breastfeed; if it cannot be done before surgery, there is little chance that it can be done after surgery.

During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will inform you in detail about the treatment, preparation and aftercare. The surgeon will also advise you which medication you may need to stop taking temporarily. In any case it is important that you stop taking any blood thinning medication two weeks before the operation. This includes aspirin.

After a facelift, it is best to lie your head a little higher while sleeping. Use an extra pillow or raise the head of the bed a little. We also recommend that you sleep on your back as much as possible during the first week. That way there will be no pressure on your face.

The duration of treatment depends on the type of facelift you undergo. For example, a general facelift takes several hours, where there are procedures that take only 30 minutes. The plastic surgeon will inform you in detail about the treatment during the consultation.

A general facelift is a good option when your face is visibly aged. Consider a deep nasolabial fold, sagging jawline or drooping cheeks that lean on the nasolabial fold. With a general facelift, the plastic surgeon treats the entire face: from the hairline to the neck. With a MACS lift, the cheeks, jawline and upper part of the neck are lifted. This treatment is suitable for people whose jawline is no longer tight, causing hamster cheeks. A mini facelift (also called an S-lift) is suitable in cases of moderate skin aging. Only some skin is removed, after which the surgeon reattaches the wound. During an initial consultation, the plastic surgeon discusses all possible treatments in detail with you and assesses which treatment is best in your situation.

In the past, facelifts were performed with a horizontal pull direction. The result was an unnaturally tight face. Also, the skin was often pulled as tight as possible in order to enjoy the results longer. Today we know that our skin has the property of stretching when under tension. Therefore, today we lift both the subcutaneous connective tissue and the dermal tissue in cases of severe skin aging. By also lifting the subcutaneous connective tissue, we restore support and the tension is much more nuanced. As a result, the result is much more natural.

For a smaller procedure such as an S-lift, local anesthesia is often sufficient. But we can also perform this treatment under general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, you will be given a sedative, so that you will not experience everything of the procedure. The larger facelifts are usually performed under general anesthesia because of the long duration.

During the facelift, you are partially or fully sedated and therefore you will experience almost no pain during the procedure. With local anesthesia, the injections can be sensitive, but during the operation you will not experience any pain. However, you can feel the plastic surgeons working on your face.

Once the anesthesia wears off, you will feel the pain of the procedure. A facelift is basically surgery on your face and neck. This is why talking and eating will be more difficult at first. We will give you a prescription for painkillers that you can pick up at the pharmacy. To relieve the pain you can cool down with a cold pack. The pain will be gone after about two weeks. Good aftercare is important for successful recovery after the procedure.

We advise you not to smoke at least three weeks before surgery until your skin has fully recovered. This is because smoking has a negative effect on the blood flow in your skin which does not help the recovery. Also, smoking increases the risk of complications.

For the first few days after surgery, you may experience pain when opening the mouth. Especially chewing can be experienced as sensitive. It is wise to adjust your diet. Think for example of consuming liquid food.

On the first day, your face and hair should not get wet. The day after the treatment, you may shower again. Do be careful when washing your hair.

It is important to avoid physically strenuous exercise for the first six weeks. After six weeks, you may return to intense sports.

Like sports, we advise against swimming, visiting the sauna and sunbathing for the first six weeks. Because heat causes swelling, this is not beneficial to the healing process. Water softens the wound edges, which can cause wounds to form more quickly. After six weeks, you may safely resume these activities.

With a facelift, wrinkles in the lower part of your face will become less deep or even disappear. A facelift will not remove wrinkles in the forehead and neck. This requires a separate treatment such as fillers, a forehead lift or a neck lift. Of course, it is important that the wrinkles that appear while laughing or talking remain visible. This is part of your face and gives it individuality.
