Upper eyelid surgery

An upper eyelid surgery to correct eyestrain, decreased vision, head and neck pain symptoms due to drooping upper eyelids or heavy eyelids. With an upper eyelid surgery, we elevate the skin at the top of the eyes to correct your symptoms and restore a fresh, open appearance. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, causing it to sag and may droop. This causes you to experience symptoms, but you may also have problems with applying makeup, for example. The experienced plastic surgeons at Blooming Clinic perform many upper eyelid corrections, making them highly skilled at performing the procedure. They ensure that the scar falls precisely into the eye crease, making it barely visible later.

If you are considering an upper eyelid surgery, please make an appointment for a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. During this initial consultation, you will discuss your symptoms, expectations and wishes. Following an examination, the plastic surgeon will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for an upper eyelid correction and which treatment method will provide the best results for you. At Blooming Clinic, you can always count on clear education and honest advice, including about treatment, possible risks and complications, and the recovery period.

Your plastic surgeon will also ask you about your health, your medical history and your medication use. If you have any questions, it is possible to ask them during the consultation as well. If you decide to proceed with treatment, all the information will be compiled into a treatment plan. That way you know exactly what to expect.

At Blooming Plastic Surgery only procedures are performed without medical indication. This means that costs for treatment are for your own account. If you can claim reimbursement from your health insurance company we advise you to make an appointment at the plastic surgery clinic of the hospital.

A 100 euro consultation fee is charged for a consultation. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

Before your treatment, the plastic surgeon will carefully mark the skin to be removed and you will be sedated. Upper eyelid surgery is almost always performed under local anesthesia by a plastic surgeon. As a result, you won’t feel anything from the procedure. After the skin has been disinfected, your plastic surgeon cuts away the excess skin. If necessary, he will also remove excess subcutaneous fatty tissue. Because the plastic surgeon makes the incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid, you will not notice the minimal scar that remains after surgery. After the procedure, the incision is subcutaneously sutured and secured with suture patches. You may return home after treatment.

Although you may go home immediately after the procedure, you will not yet be able to drive yourself. Make sure someone is present who can drive you home after the procedure. After the treatment your eyes may be swollen, red and/or blue. To reduce the swelling, we recommend using an extra pillow, at least the first night, so that your head is a little higher. The swelling and bruising generally subside within a week. Keep plenty of rest to promote your recovery.

In general, the pain after upper eyelid surgery is not too bad, but painkillers and cooling with a cold pack can help for the first few hours after the procedure. To promote your recovery, it is also important that you get plenty of rest. We recommend that you avoid strenuous activity for the first three to six weeks. You should also avoid wearing contact lenses for the first two weeks.

You will visit the clinic one week after the operation. We will remove the stitches and the plastic surgeon will monitor your recovery. You will be informed about the further procedure. During the first six months the scar will still be red, but it will gradually fade. We advise you to protect the scar from the sun to avoid discoloration. After the removal of the stitches, a good result can already be seen, but it will take six months before you are fully recovered.

As with the majority of surgical procedures, there are some risks associated with upper eyelid surgery. Although these risks are very exceptional, we are happy to inform you of them.

Rare

  • Allergic reaction to the disinfectant, plasters or anesthetic liquid
  • Thrombosis

Very rare

  • Post-bleeding
  • Wound infection
  • Impaired wound healing

Although the plastic surgeons at Clinic Blooming are highly experienced and work with precision, there is always a very minimal chance that an exact symmetrical result will not be achieved.

Scars

Because the scars fall into the natural crease of the upper eyelid, you can hardly see the scars after complete recovery. The scars are still red in color during the first period, but this color becomes lighter and lighter. Avoid UV radiation during recovery.

Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of infection. Therefore, we strongly recommend quitting at least six weeks before the procedure. It is important that you keep this up for at least six weeks after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

When there is a congenital eye defect, a chronic condition from birth, or a severe visual field limitation, eyelid surgery is covered under the basic package. You can consult your health insurance company prior to treatment to be sure whether the treatment will be reimbursed for you.

How long the results of eyelid surgery will be visible to you cannot be said exactly because it varies from person to person. On average, the result is visible for ten to fifteen years. After eyelid correction, your eyes will look fresh and rested, but remember that the aging process in your body does continue. Get the most out of the treatment by living a healthy life and taking good care of your body.

Scars from eye surgery are barely visible, as the incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid. For the first two weeks after treatment, the skin may be red in color, but this will disappear on its own.

Yes, you may. You may wear your lenses again as soon as you can easily insert and remove them without pulling too much on the eyelid. We recommend that you wear glasses for the first week after surgery.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as drooping eyelids, puffiness, limited field of vision, tired look or headaches, eyelid surgery may be the answer. During an initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your situation and assess whether such a procedure is the appropriate solution for you.

Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure. Therefore, it is wise to make some preparations beforehand. Keep in mind that you will need recovery time after the treatment. Arrange this with your work and arrange for babysitting for your children. You must not lift or bend heavily after the treatment. During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss with you in detail how you can best prepare yourself.

You can start applying scar cream as soon as the scabs on the eyelid have disappeared. Try to apply the cream as lightly as possible during the first two weeks. We will give you the scar cream during your first check-up appointment at the clinic.

Basically, anyone who is unhappy with their eyes can undergo eyelid surgery. We find that most people who opt for eyelid surgery are over the age of 30. Nevertheless, young people can also come to us for treatment. Puffiness or drooping eyebrows or eyelids are often hereditary.

For the first six weeks, we recommend that you minimize exposure to the sun. When you do, it is important to use sunglasses and good sunscreen with a high protection factor.

No, it is best not to drive yourself after eyelid surgery. Therefore, take someone with you when you undergo the procedure or come by public transportation.

It depends on the type of work you do when you can return to work. For the first few days, you will bruise and have swollen skin around the eyes. Light housework is allowed for the first week. Do you perform physically demanding work? Then we recommend that you resume your work slowly after about three to four weeks. Listen carefully to your body. You know best what you can and cannot do.

As long as the stitches are still in, you cannot wear make-up on your eyes. Once the stitches are removed, you may wear make-up again. Be careful with this for the first two months. Especially when removing make-up.

It is wise to take some rest for the first few weeks. After an average of three to four weeks you can slowly resume sports. During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will inform you in detail about your recovery.

The day after the procedure you may shower again. Try to keep the wound dry as much as possible until the stitches are removed. Did the wound get wet? Then carefully pat it dry.

Eyelid correction treatments take place within the Spaarne Gasthuis in Haarlem. Our clinic is located within this hospital. You can also stay overnight here.
