Upper arm lift

Due to extreme emaciation, pregnancies, aging or surgery, the skin and fat of the upper arm can become very saggy and wrinkly. This can be corrected with plastic surgery: the upper arm lift. Using a medical term, this surgery is called dermolipectomy of the upper arms.

The treatment process

What is the treatment process for an upper arm lift?

Anesthesia

General anesthesia

Operation duration

120 – 240 minutes

Recovery time

2 – 4 weeks

During the first consultation, everything to do with the treatment is discussed: which method is best for you, what result you can expect, the possible risks and aftercare. You will always receive honest advice and clear information about the treatment and the period afterwards. During this consultation, the plastic surgeon will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for an upper arm lift. The surgeon will ask about your health, your medical background and what medications you are taking.

If you are taking any medications, you must tell the plastic surgeon. Blood-thinning drugs, depending on the drug, should not be taken for up to two weeks before surgery. You must also stop smoking at least six weeks before the operation. Smoking constricts blood vessels, which can cause problems with wound healing. If you are overweight, it is necessary to lose weight before surgery. The result of the surgery is then better and the risk of infection is significantly reduced.

A consultation is subject to a €100 consultation fee. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

An upper arm lift is performed under general anesthesia. If the laxity of the upper arm is slight, surgical correction can be performed by stretching and suturing the skin in the armpit. In most cases, however, the skin will need to be tightened in two directions. This creates a long S-shaped scar from elbow to armpit. The scar is made in the inside of the upper arm so that it is less noticeable later. If necessary, excess fat is removed in the same correction. The skin is sutured with subcutaneous sutures and sealed with suture patches. Improved techniques often eliminate the need for drains. The surgery is a day case and overnight if necessary.

After surgery, we recommend wearing tight elastic tights with upper arms. You should wear these day and night for 4 weeks and then during the day for another 2 weeks. For the first 2 weeks after surgery, you should move your arms as little as possible. Wound healing takes about 2 weeks. After that, you may begin light work. Heavy work and sports can be done after 4 to 6 weeks.

An upper arm lift has the same risks as any other surgery. The wound can become infected, which is incidentally rare. The greatest risk of infection is in people who have too much subcutaneous fat tissue. Therefore, it is important to have as normal a weight as possible before surgery. Once in a while bleeding can occur. You will then need another operation in which the doctor closes the bleeding blood vessel.

Rare

  • Blood accumulation under the skin
  • Post-bleeding
  • Allergic reactions
  • Infection of the treatment area

Rare

  • Change of feeling
  • Dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result
  • Damaged underlying structures

Scars
Scars are red and swollen at first, but this usually lessens after six weeks. Keep in mind that a scar takes about a year to a year and a half to reach a final stage. Keep scars out of the sun and take care of them with a scar cream.

Smoking
Stop smoking at least six weeks before and up to six weeks after treatment. Smoking constricts blood vessels, which can cause problems with wound healing. The risk of subsequent bleeding is reduced once you stop smoking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years, the skin of your upper arms loses elasticity. This causes the skin to become flabby and droop. Even when you lose a lot of weight, drooping of your upper arms is possible. Once this bothers you, you can consider an upper arm lift.

The result is basically permanent: your skin does not stretch by itself if your weight remains the same. If your weight increases, there is a chance that your arms will also grow.

No, the upper arm lift does not change the quality of your skin. If you suffered from stretch marks on your upper arms before the procedure, they will still be present after the lift. During the procedure, our specialists tighten your upper arms, which does make them look more attractive.
