Ear correction

An ear correction can be a solution if you feel insecure or unhappy with your floppy or protruding ears. For some people, protruding ears are an annoying phenomenon, sometimes resulting in psychological problems. With an ear correction we correct the position and shape of your protruding ears, so that your insecurity disappears completely. Protruding ears occur in 1 in 20 people and have no functional disadvantage. They work just as well as ears that are closer to the head. Nevertheless, floppy ears are sometimes seen as a beauty flaw, which is why we perform ear corrections on adults.

The treatment process

What is the treatment process for ear correction?

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia

Operation duration

45 minuten

Recovery time

7 – 14 days

During the first consultation, you discuss your questions, complaints and wishes with your attending plastic surgeon. Then the surgeon asks you about your expectations of the plastic surgery procedure, so that he can link these directly to the technical possibilities. The plastic surgeon will also discuss how the treatment works, explain the procedure and inform you about possible risks and complications.

A 100 euro consultation fee is charged for a consultation. These will be deducted from the final price of the treatment.

Ear correction and straightening of floppy ears can be performed under local anesthesia, but is usually done under general anesthesia. In the former case, the procedure takes place at the outpatient clinic and you can go home after a few hours. If the ear correction is performed under general anesthesia, you will need to stay in the hospital for several more hours. Sometimes an overnight stay is recommended.

Correction of floppy ears

During surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision on the back of the ear. The cartilaginous skeleton of the ear is remodeled and secured to the inside of the ear with sutures. This brings the ear closer to the head. This creates a fold of skin at the back. This excess skin tissue is removed by the surgeon. Because of the incision the plastic surgeon makes, a scar is left on the back of the ear after surgery. This spot is fortunately very inconspicuous, so the scar will hardly be visible.

Correction of oversized ears

If you are unhappy with the size and shape of one or both ears, we can perform an ear correction. Have your earlobes grown too large? During the procedure, we correct them so they fit the shape of your ear again. The surgeon tries to make the incisions of this procedure in inconspicuous places so that the scars are less visible. This can be done in an existing skin fold, for example.

In most cases, you may go home the same day after ear surgery. It also happens that you will stay overnight in the hospital. This way we can offer you the right aftercare. You may return home as soon as the plastic surgeon and assistants deem it responsible. You cannot drive yourself, please make sure that someone takes you home.

After ear surgery, you will be given a tight bandage around your head; leave it on for a week. Washing your hair will not be as easy. One to two weeks after the procedure, you will visit us at the clinic for a check-up and removal of any stitches. You may then shower and wash your hair at the same time. It is important that you pat your ears dry after showering. You may resume light activities after about ten days. Please try to avoid bending over. Once the bandage is removed, you will wear a hair bandage day and night for about two to four weeks to protect your ears. You should also be careful with your ears during the day, for example when you play sports. It is common for the auricles to remain somewhat red, swollen and sensitive for weeks. This will gradually disappear. You can take painkillers for the pain. In case of extreme pain and bleeding you should contact the plastic surgeon immediately. After six weeks you can resume sports, as long as you protect your ears well. After six weeks the swelling and sensitivity of your ears will decrease.

Straightening floppy ears has the same risks as any other surgery. The wound may bleed or an infection may occur. Fortunately, this almost never occurs. The results of ear corrections are generally good. However, cartilage is an unruly type of tissue that sometimes tends to return to its original shape. Therefore, that the ears remain straight and completely symmetrical can never be 100% guaranteed. Occasionally it is necessary to perform another correction, but even then a symmetrical result cannot be guaranteed.

Risks and complications that can occur after ear surgery are:

Rare

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Impaired wound healing
  • Swelling
  • Post-bleeding
  • Asymmetry

Very rare

  • Prolonged sensitive ears
  • Formation of severely thickened scars
  • Recession of the ears

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, ear correction takes place under local anesthesia. The advantage of this form of anesthesia is that you do not suffer from the aftermath after the procedure.

Yes, in principle, we can adjust any position of the ear. We do this by reshaping the cartilage of the ears to give your ears the correct shape and position.

The first few days will involve sleeping. It is best to position your head a little higher by placing an extra pillow under your head. You can also raise the headboard a little on an adjustable bed. We also recommend sleeping on your back so that there is as little pressure on your face as possible.

The scars from the correction can be found on the back of the auricle, so that they are least noticeable.

An ear correction can be painful after the anesthesia has worn off. To suppress the pain, we recommend taking painkillers regularly for the first 24 to 48 hours. This will help you avoid the pain and reduce the degree of pain.
